Employee-Owner Profiles - Ollie Ward

After years in the U.S. Coast Guard, Ollie Ward was looking for a change. So, when Sentry reached out two years ago, it seemed like a perfect fit. The variety of work in the service department was appealing to him and a good fit for his “methodical” personality.

As a service tech, he continuously works in new locations and new areas within plants. He interacts and works with people at all tiers within the companies, which allows him to be focused entirely on the customer.

“Every day is a new challenge, and it keeps you on your toes,” he says.

Ollie enjoys the strong collaboration between the sales and service teams. These teams work together to provide a cohesive experience for the customer. The sales team collaborates with the service team to improve product discussions and insight on the customer relationship, while the service team provides feedback to sales regarding what plants need.

“The ability to problem solve and the constant new day is exciting,” he says. “You never know what to expect or what repair the equipment will need.”

His days are divided between “in town” plants and “out-of-town” plants, where he visits the plants, then provides service based on customers’ feedback. He also works to build relationships with customers and develop trust that allows him to solve problems.

Who inspires you the most? “My wife. She is brilliant, talented, and hardworking and pushes me to be better at everything I do.”

Three things he’d take on a deserted island: “Weapon for protection, seeds for planting/growing food, and a way to purify water.”

If you could be or do anything else, what would it be? “A psychiatrist. I was interested in schooling after leaving the coast guard but couldn’t make the eight-year time commitment.”

Committed to employee ownership

When he meets with customers, he highlights Sentry’s employee-owned business model, which helps lead the way in sampling for multiple industries. Employee-owners share in an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP), so we all share in the benefits of our hard work, positive results, and continual improvement and innovation.

His biggest challenge comes from the remote communications that the service team relies on. “The remote access diminishes the in-person communication, and it would be easier with a meeting spot or location we can go to before starting our day,” he says.

Ollie says he looks forward to advancing his career over time with the service team. “There is a lot of opportunity for growth in the future, and this growth will allow for new roles and responsibilities,” he says.
In that progress, he anticipates helping new employee-owners find their niche within the company and showing them the unique work environment at Sentry Equipment.

“Stay flexible since anything can happen in a moment,” he advises. “Everyone is always willing to help, which has made it a great place to work between the variety of work.”
